Cryoprecipitate

Derives from the coagulation factor VIII-rich cryoprotein fraction that is separated from frozen human plasma.

Frozen plasma is thawed between 1 - 6° the precipitate is then recovered and is rich in fibrinogen, factor VIII, von Willebrand factor, factor XIII, and fibronectin. The concentrated precipitate is then suspended in a fluid medium, often plasma. Given to patients with coagulation problems such as hemophilia or to prevent catastrophic bleeding during surgery or obstetric procedures; also used in the preparation of fibrin glue.
